Its been a long time coming, but Happy 250th Birthday, y’all! Is it not awesome that we get to celebrate 250th birthday of an idea that a group of people envisioned so long ago? They acted on that vision, paying with blood, sweat and tears to make it become a reality.
And they have kept paying by fight numerous wars even amongst themselves to keep that vision in perpetuity. It is up to us to ensure the next generations have life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness that we enjoy, despite those that seek to take it away.
While there were long hunters that passed through Native American lands, it was not until after an 1805 treaty between the United States and Native Americans that people started settling around Standing Stone. The Officers, the Whitakers, the Sehons, and then a floodgate of other families made their way to the western edge of the Upper Cumberland Plateau.
Here we are today, and we are ready to party! That is what we are going to do, and we are going to start early! It all starts on Friday, July 3 with our FIRE ON THE MOUJNTAIN FESTIVAL. When we say “Fire on the Mountain” we really mean it it in a big way. It will start with music and lots of fun, ending with a big KABOOM!
• COOKEVILLE COMMUNITY BAND. (Noon) at Whitaker Park.
The Cookeville Community Band presents a series of concerts each summer as well as a holiday concert. All summer concerts are free to the public and take place every other Monday evening at the Performance Pavilion in Dogwood Park. The holiday concert is held in the Cookeville Performing Arts Center (CPAC).
The Cookeville Community Band, “The Sound of the Cumberland,” was formed in 2002 by the late Wayne Pegram. It consists of public-school band directors, college professors, college and high school students and local musicians, both active and retired, who love to play the great wind band music. Members of the ensemble come from the entire Upper Cumberland area.
