For those looking to take in a Gilmore Girls-esque autumn day, in the closest thing to Stars Hollow you’ll find this side of Hollywood, Standing Stone Day in Monterey, TN is for you!
Named after the small surviving piece of a huge rock monolith that once existed just west of Monterey which served as a trail marker on the heavily traveled Old Walton Road, Standing Stone Day has become a staple of fall in the Upper Cumberland!
Note: The original structure is believed to have been crafted by the Mound Builders approximately 1,500 years ago and visitors can view what remains of it at the Monterey Public Library.
This year’s event, preceded by the Miss Standing Stone Pageant on September 28th, will feature a slew of vendors selling artisan-quality items and food, a parade snaking through “Main Street” (Commercial Avenue), traditional American Indian performances resonating off the walls of the Monterey Public Library, laughter and energy emanating from crowds soaking up the sack race and pan throwing contests, plus an incredible lineup of local performers (Jordyn Walker, Cherokee Hope, and The Garrett Boys – performances begin at 11:30 am) filling the air and listeners hearts with music. For specific times for ALL the above-mentioned events, follow the Monterey Depot Museum on Facebook!
