Read on to learn more about Monterey’s new headman, Alex Garcia!

Cuban-American, second-generation U.S. Citizen, business-centric thinker, mayor of Monterey.

Alex Garcia.

Monterey’s newly-elected leader takes the reins this month, filling a void left after the passing of previous Mayor Nathan Walker in 2022.

Garcia stated, “I actually picked up paper two years ago for both the mayor and alderman positions. At the time Nathan Walker also grabbed papers for mayor. We had a conversation and I told him that if he wanted it, I would run for alderman and not mayor. I didn’t want to run against him. We were very similar and like-minded. He let me know that he wanted to run for mayor and I turned in my papers for alderman.” He elaborated, “It wasn’t long after (winning the mayoral seat) that Nathan sadly passed away and Mark Farley became acting mayor, a position he’s held since. We’ve not had an elected mayor for two years.”

Garcia, his wife Sandra, and daughter Alex moved to Monterey in 2006 and immediately became central figures in the community. And, having served on the board of aldermen for years, Alex not only loves the city, but has the knowledge and experience required to
sustain its current momentum.

“I think the mayor needs to be our voice outside of Monterey, a voice for Monterey. That was my main reason for running for mayor. I think we’re going to see a lot of growth in Monterey over the next five years. We have to be careful because we want to keep the small-town feel. That’s one of the things I love is that it’s a small town and wherever you go everyone knows each other.” He continued, “We also have to grow, but it’s a fine line. One of the things that I’m bringing to the table is viewing this city like it must be viewed, as a business. It has to be run like a business to survive. This year I took over the budget and ran with it under the belief that we can’t just keep going with the status quo. We have to ask questions such as, ‘What’s the ROI on this?’ ‘Do we really need it?’ I want to keep moving forward, but I want to move forward and up at the same time in a way that keeps Monterey, Monterey, but also gives us the brightest possible future.”

Alex Garcia is ready to get to work for Monterey.

Professionally, he has the expertise and savvy needed to keep the city moving forward.

On a personal level, Alex is a talented, supportive man who I fully believe will pour his heart into the position and all things Monterey throughout his time as mayor.
